Assignment 1

required our group to conduct a literature-based analysis of an existing low-energy or net-zero building. We were required to investigate how the building's energy-efficient strategies reduced energy demand and contributed to overall building performance. As part of the assignment, we identified the building's sustainable features, including its façade, lighting system, HVAC system, waste management, renewable energy, and water management, before selecting one strategy for a more detailed analysis. We also referred to post-occupancy evaluation (POE) findings to support our research and presented our findings in a 5–10 minute infographic video.

Assignment II

required our group to conduct a site visit to a recognised energy-efficient green building in Malaysia to observe and evaluate its sustainable design strategies firsthand. During the visit, we planned the structure, content, and script of a 5–10 minute vlog while working collaboratively as directors, videographers, and narrators, ensuring that every group member participated. The final deliverable was presented in the style of a YouTuber or TikTok influencer, allowing us to communicate our observations and understanding of the building's energy-efficient features in an engaging and accessible way.

Assignment III

required students to conduct an individual walk-through energy audit of their own home to evaluate its overall energy performance. The assignment involved analysing the building's climate-responsive design, energy and water consumption, electrical appliance usage, occupant behaviour, and carbon emissions. Based on the findings, students were required to identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency and propose suitable passive and active strategies to reduce long-term energy consumption and enhance the home's environmental performance.

Reflection

Overall, this module has greatly enhanced my understanding of low-energy architecture by bridging theory, real-world observation, and practical application. Each assignment built upon the previous one, allowing me to develop both technical knowledge and a deeper appreciation of sustainable design. More importantly, I have learned that architects have a responsibility to consider a building's environmental performance and its long-term impact on occupants. The knowledge and skills gained throughout this module will guide my future design decisions and encourage me to create architecture that is energy-efficient, climate-responsive, and sustainable.
