Theories Of Asian Architecture

PROJECT 1 : CONTEXTUAL STUDY SKETCH JOURNAL OF A TRADITIONAL STREET

For this project, we conducted a thorough analysis of the chosen site, Jalan Tun HS Lee, using history books and online articles. Our comprehensive study included a hand-drawn site plan , physical and non-physical context analysis, and an identification of the site's architectural significance. The physical context analysis examined existing structures while the non-physical context focused on cultural, historical, and social aspects. I also highlighted key buildings and landmarks for their historical value. Finally, I wrote asummary based on my observation during the site visit.

Through this project, I enhanced my observational and research skills, becoming proficient in documenting detailed observations and sketches of Jalan Tun HS Lee. I developed a keen eye for architectural and cultural details and improved my analytical thinking regarding urban environments. However, I could have managed my time better to allow for a more thorough site visit, delved deeper into certain research aspects, engaged more with locals for firsthand insights, and improved my sketching techniques through regular practice. Overall, this project was a valuable learning experience, and addressing these areas for improvement will make future projects even more insightful and comprehensive.

PROJECT 2 : POSTER AND SEMINAR CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

This project explores tradition and modernization in Asian architecture. After selecting a major topic, students must conduct an extensive literature review to identify specific issues and the significance of their study. This will help define the precise scope of their research and generate a research title that accurately reflects the intention and focus of their study. The project concludes with a research poster and a 10-minute video presentation, making up 50% of the final grade. It aims to deepen understanding of vernacular architecture and improve research and presentation skills.

The project on "Preserving the Essence of Jalan Tun HS Lee: Addressing Dilapidation and Neglect" provided me with a deep understanding of the challenges in balancing historical preservation with modern urban needs. I enhanced my research skills through an extensive literature review, which helped define the precise scope of our study and develop a focused research title. Collaborating effectively within the group improved my teamwork and communication skills, while creating the research poster and video presentation refined my ability to present complex information clearly. However, better time management could have led to a more polished final product, and engaging more with the local community might have offered deeper insights. Additionally, defining the research scope earlier and improving my technical skills in design would have further strengthened the project's impact. Overall, the experience was valuable, highlighting areas for improvement while significantly advancing my research and presentation skills.
